You Don’t Always Have to Make Your Guitar Sound Like Everyone Else’

We’re so used to running electric guitar amps through speakers that it’s easy to forget there are other ways to get a great guitar sound. Speakers are incredibly useful. They also smooth out the raw, sometimes harsh sound that comes directly from an amp or preamp.

But what’s wrong with a bit of rawness?

If you’re writing a guitar-driven punk rock song, for example, that fizzy, aggressive, unpolished sound might be exactly what the track needs.

Some legendary bands have taken this approach. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Nirvana have all recorded gritty, gnarly guitar sounds by plugging directly into a mixing console and pushing the gain. So clearly, the technique can work!
